Writer’s Workshop Entry #1

I’ve discovered Mama Kat and her wonderful writing workshop weekly meme months ago, but I didn’t have a blog back then, so I couldn’t do anything about it.

But now that I DO have a blog and my writing skills are kinda rusty, so I figured, I do need to join.

Problem is, which one of the prompts am I going to write about???
Hhhhmmm…

At the risk of sounding cheesy and mushy, I’ll write about “Something Unique You Love About Your Significant Other”.

Ooookay… now what? Sure, it sounds easy enough to write about, but now that I think about it… what IS something unique I love about my boyfriend?

Believe it or not, I had to search Dictionary.com first to get the exact definition of UNIQUE.

1. existing as the only one or as the sole example; single; solitary in type or characteristics: a unique copy of an ancient manuscript.
2. having no like or equal; unparalleled; incomparable: Bach was unique in his handling of counterpoint.
3. limited in occurrence to a given class, situation, or area: a species unique to Australia.

5. not typical; unusual: She has a very unique smile.

GREAT. Now the seemingly easiest prompt turned into the HARDEST ONE.

Okay, okay, no more dawdling. I’m going to start writing now, so here goes…

Something unique that I love about my boyfriend is, he CANNOT stay in Starbucks for a long time. Heck, he can’t even stay there long enough to wait for our order. He keeps telling me, “Can we just drink it outside?”, “You go wait for our coffee, and I’ll go wait for you outside?” or the heartbreaking “Do we really have to buy coffee from Starbucks?”

See, Starbucks here in the Philippines is considered one of the status markers of the elite (looking at it from a middle-class citizen’s perspective). Not just Starbucks though, but any kind of fancy-shmancy coffee shop. If you come out of a coffee shop, holding a plastic cup with store’s name plastered on it, and some (not all) will look at you like you’re a thick wad of cash. They’ll think, “Oooh, she just came out of (name of a coffee shop), she must be rich. I bet she goes there everyday!” Some (again, I say SOME), mostly teenagers, go there by droves, ordering one Frappe, so all of them could stay inside the cafe, hoping their peers can see them as cool and whatnot.

But my boyfriend doesn’t want to drink coffee inside Starbucks, or any coffee shop for that matter. Not that he doesn’t like the coffee, because he sure does (he just thinks it’s too expensive)! He DOESN’T WANT TO STAY INSIDE because, he doesn’t want to be around the rich-and-cool and the pretending-to-be-rich-and-cool people. He wants to drink his hot cup of coffee in peace, away from the prying eyes of adolescents, trying to see what other people had for a drink.

HE DOESN’T CARE IF HE’S COOL OR NOT. HE JUST WANTS TO ENJOY HIS COFFEE. 🙂

And that, my friends, is one of many unique things that I love about Ram. I love you Honey! 🙂
