Writer’s Workshop Entry #1

Mama's Losin' It

I’ve discovered Mama Kat and her wonderful writing workshop weekly meme months ago, but I didn’t have a blog back then, so I couldn’t do anything about it.

But now that I DO have a blog and my writing skills are kinda rusty, so I figured, I do need to join.

Problem is, which one of the prompts am I going to write about???
Hhhhmmm…

At the risk of sounding cheesy and mushy, I’ll write about “Something Unique You Love About Your Significant Other”.

Ooookay… now what? Sure, it sounds easy enough to write about, but now that I think about it… what IS something unique I love about my boyfriend?

Believe it or not, I had to search Dictionary.com first to get the exact definition of UNIQUE.

–adjective
1. existing as the only one or as the sole example; single; solitary in type or characteristics: a unique copy of an ancient manuscript.
2. having no like or equal; unparalleled; incomparable: Bach was unique in his handling of counterpoint.
3. limited in occurrence to a given class, situation, or area: a species unique to Australia.
4. limited to a single outcome or result; without alternative possibilities: Certain types of problems have unique solutions.
5. not typical; unusual: She has a very unique smile.

GREAT. Now the seemingly easiest prompt turned into the HARDEST ONE.

Okay, okay, no more dawdling. I’m going to start writing now, so here goes…

Something unique that I love about my boyfriend is, he CANNOT stay in Starbucks for a long time. Heck, he can’t even stay there long enough to wait for our order. He keeps telling me, “Can we just drink it outside?”, “You go wait for our coffee, and I’ll go wait for you outside?” or the heartbreaking “Do we really have to buy coffee from Starbucks?”

See, Starbucks here in the Philippines is considered one of the status markers of the elite (looking at it from a middle-class citizen’s perspective). Not just Starbucks though, but any kind of fancy-shmancy coffee shop. If you come out of a coffee shop, holding a plastic cup with store’s name plastered on it, and some (not all) will look at you like you’re a thick wad of cash. They’ll think, “Oooh, she just came out of (name of a coffee shop), she must be rich. I bet she goes there everyday!” Some (again, I say SOME), mostly teenagers, go there by droves, ordering one Frappe, so all of them could stay inside the cafe, hoping their peers can see them as cool and whatnot.

But my boyfriend doesn’t want to drink coffee inside Starbucks, or any coffee shop for that matter. Not that he doesn’t like the coffee, because he sure does (he just thinks it’s too expensive)! He DOESN’T WANT TO STAY INSIDE because, he doesn’t want to be around the rich-and-cool and the pretending-to-be-rich-and-cool people. He wants to drink his hot cup of coffee in peace, away from the prying eyes of adolescents, trying to see what other people had for a drink.

HE DOESN’T CARE IF HE’S COOL OR NOT. HE JUST WANTS TO ENJOY HIS COFFEE. πŸ™‚

And that, my friends, is one of many unique things that I love about Ram. I love you Honey! πŸ™‚

PS > I know you’ve been playing Defense of the Ancients (DotA) for hours now. Get off the computer already! >:< I love you! πŸ™‚ Now, get off! :<

I think your boyfriend’s uniqueness is great! He’s just being true to himself – he doesn’t need to impress anyone!

Can’t ask for much more than that! Seems like EVERYBODY here drinks Starbucks. I agree with your boyfriend…the stuff is good, but way overpriced!

Great response to Mama’s Prompts! I have my own Keurig maker at home, so I don’t get to Starbucks that often. But honestly…I do miss their Eggnog Lattes and specialty frappes every now and then. I’d say you have something worth more than a Vanilla Bean frappucino, though…and that your guy!

If you have time, stop by my entry and let me know what you think!

Wow, that’s an education to me (the way a visit to Starbucks is viewed in a different country). It is a very endearing quality that he doesn’t want to be seen as pretentious.

Unless there is a prompt I simply HAVE TO write about each week, I put the numbers 1-5 into the random number generator at random.org and let it “assign” me a prompt. The evil thing seems to always hand me a poem if that’s one of the prompt options!!

Glad to have you in the Mama Kat family!

Hi! Stopping by from Mama Kat’s Writing Workshop! I was fascinated by your account of the perception of Starbucks in the Phillipines. I had no idea. Your boyfriend would hate me! I have a serious Starbucks addiction. Have to get my latte on the way to work every morning. But here in Boston, it doesn’t make me appear elite…just another caffeine-addicted working mom!

What an admirable trait your boyfriend has! My husband is the same in that he really doesn’t care what status other people give him. He is just himself and that’s it!

Stopping over from Mama Kat’s! And I love the look of your blog!

It’s interesting how other cultures can see something that a person from North America just thinks is part of their day.

Hi everyone! πŸ™‚ Thank you for all the comments! πŸ™‚ I feel so overwhelmed, considering it’s my first time to join Mama Kat’s workshop.

Anyway, let me clarify that NOT ALL Filipinos think that way. I mean, that’s just me and the rest of the middle-class people here.

@Carrie: Yeah, it’s sort of weird that Starbucks is sort of an elite marker here.

@Nicole: Thank you sooo much! πŸ™‚ It IS a good trait for guys to have. I think there are more guys who don’t think much about social appearances. Girls however, may care a BIT more — I’m feeling slightly guilty! πŸ˜›

@Kate Hayes: Me too! πŸ™‚ I totally love Starbucks! But I still manage to go inside the shop and get coffee, when I’m on my break from work (or in other words, when he’s not around). πŸ˜› I only buy from Starbucks when I get my paycheck. πŸ˜›

@Paula Kiger: Thank you for the welcome! πŸ™‚ Yeah, he isn’t pretentious at all. I guess it stems from the fact that he came from humble beginnings. πŸ™‚

@auntbethany: Oh, thank you sooo much, he is as sweet as a Vanilla Bean Frappe too! πŸ™‚ If I had a REALLY GOOD coffee maker, I’d probably lessen the times I pass by Starbucks.

@Kim: Yeah, it is waaaay overpriced! The cost of a tall Frappuccino can buy an average person a heavy lunch meal with dessert, with change to spare! But there’s no denying, their coffee’s really good. πŸ™‚

    @mjrodriguez: Kababayan! πŸ™‚ Thank you ah.. πŸ™‚

@June Freaking Cleaver: Thank you sooo much… yes, he doesn’t need to impress anyone but me. πŸ™‚

No one who regularly goes to Starbucks has any money. They spend it all on $6 cups of coffee!! So your boyfriend is very smart. Plus, he’s cute! πŸ˜‰

@Bruna: Thank you for your generous compliment! πŸ™‚ I bet my boyfriend’s ears will be turning red now.. πŸ˜›

@the undomestic housewife: Thank you! πŸ™‚ I’m learning a lot of American culture from reading blog entries from Mama Kat’s as well! πŸ™‚

@Leigh Ann: Really? I thought my post was a bit predictable. But anyway, thank you for the compliment! πŸ™‚

@The Princess Blogger: Yeah, it would definitely save a lot of money! πŸ™‚

@Leslie Limon: I sure hope so! πŸ™‚ We’ve been dating for almost four years now. πŸ™‚

@Cheryl: $6 dollars?? Really?? Whoa… Anyway, thank you! πŸ™‚ My boyfriend’s soooo going to turn tomato-red now. Heehee! πŸ™‚

I think when I first started reading it, I just thought he didn’t want to go to Starbucks. But then you said that it’s not the coffee, it’s the company inside the coffee shop he doesn’t like, it all came together. He’s way cooler than all those people are even trying to be. πŸ™‚
